Tomgraney Castle rose beside a Clare river around 1550, its rubble walls guarding the O'Grady territory of Hy-donghaile. The tower still stands in ruins, marked by gun loops and a machicolation above the entrance. It is easy to imagine people watching the water from those narrow openings, waiting for danger or simply naming the day by the movement of light across the stone.

Freestanding orthogonal-plan single-bay three-stage tower with base batter, built c. 1550, now in ruins. Parapet with string course below, formerly battlemented. Rubble stone walls with machicolation over entrance. Various openings including gun loops and pointed arch openings. On river bank adjacent to church built by O'Grady, Lords of territory of Hy-donghaile, noted in TCD lists of castles of Thomond and in Annals of the Four Masters (1564)
