Major Henry Langley commissioned Brittas Castle near Thurles around 1830, intending it to be Ireland's first invented medieval ruin. William Vitruvius Morrison designed polygonal towers, machicolations and a moat, but a falling stone killed Langley in 1834 and the work stopped. The unfinished limestone shell still stands with its portcullis slots, dungeon and battered walls, preserving the moment ambition collapsed under its own weight.
