Grave Yard

Haroldstown Grave Yard in County Carlow holds a rare perfect square, bounded by a five-course granite wall and centred on the buried footprint of an east-west church. The deliberate geometry suggests the ground was measured and claimed before the first burial, while a cross-inscribed pillar and moulded doorway fragment point to activity reaching back further than the medieval period. Twenty-first-century stones with pseudo-Celtic crosses still mark the northern and south-eastern edges, carrying the place into living memory.
