Mass-rock in Tavraun — Report the wrong picture

Tavraun in County Mayo, Ireland, is where local tradition places a missing mass rock. That is a church without a building, a worship space reduced to memory and grass. People may have stood at that rock, listened to prayer, and left it behind only gradually. The rock is gone from the account now, but the shape of the story remains: a small Christian life lived openly in a hostile age, then withdrawn into silence.

According to local tradition, there was a mass rock in Tavraun townland. It was listed in the RMP (1997) at this location based on information from a local source. A mass rock was used in Tavraun as a secret site for Catholic worship during periods of religious persecution in Ireland, particularly under anti-Catholic laws in the 17th and 18th centuries. Such sites were often discreetly marked and protected by local communities.
