Structure

A peatland survey carried out in 2006 by Archaeological Development Services recorded a togher measuring in ‘width 2.7m, depth 0.14m, length 3.8m, dated to 420-390BC’ (Whitaker 2006, 103). Described by Whitaker (2006, 103) as ‘this site was located on the northern side of the bog and was visible on the field surface and in the opposing drain face. It had been truncated down the centre by drain-cutting machinery but it was dearly oval in plan. It was composed of regularly spaced brushwood pegs, with a smaller number of roundwood pegs, inserted into the peat at angles of between 40° and 60°. The elements were moderately preserved, but the upper part of the structure had been removed by machinery. Seven parallel brushwoods, orientated northwest-southeast, were located to the southwest of the structure. The brushwood pegs had an average diameter of 0.04m and the roundwood pegs of 0.07m. The peat in which the possible animal trap was located was composed of moderately humified Sphagnum peat with moderate Eriphorum and occasional Calluna inclusions’.
