What is recorded here
Not a chamber, not a temple, but a marker: a tall granite post set where a road bent or a boundary changed. It still stands in a Carlow field, square-sided and unmarked except for a shallow groove on one face. People may have read it at a glance, not studied it, which is what makes a landmark useful. Distance does not erase that function; it only tests whether the place still understands itself.
Granite stone, with almost square cross-section (H 1.8m; girth 2.6m). Small groove on E face. Described by Macalister (1910, 350) as 'a conspicuous standing stone in a field on the right-hand side of the road, and is visible for a long distance. There can be little doubt that it was meant for a landmark of some kind. The stone is about 5 feet 10 inches high; it bears no marks of any kind'.

Dated to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had ceremonial or territorial significance. The small groove on its eastern face could indicate ritual use or symbolic marking, though specific folklore or function remains unrecorded.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
