Burial Ground

Burial ground

What is recorded here

A prehistoric rath at Ballindoo in County Mayo now holds graves because communities kept returning to its level interior for burial. The earthwork may have sheltered living people during the early medieval period, yet headstones and loose stones fill the space where a farmhouse or yard once stood. That change does not diminish the place; it continues the purpose of the rath by sheltering people who no longer speak.
In a rath (MA051-007001-). Indicated as ‘Burial ground’ on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps. The level interior of the rath is strewn with loose stones throughout. Amidst the stone spread, several small upright slabs mark or outline graves, all largely obscured by overgrowth. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 June 2020
