Fairy forts are earthen rings left behind when the fairies flew away at the sound of church bells. Shannongrove keeps one such ring on a low hill, its scarped edge still standing a metre high after centuries of pasture. The fairies may have abandoned it in a hurry, but the earth remembered their shape.

In pasture, atop low hill. Oval area (27.7m N-S; 23.8m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1m; Wth 5.15m). Scarp is best preserved SE->NW, but lowers NW->N (H 0.15m; Wth 2.6m). Interior, under pasture, slopes down gently to S. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
