Cross in Saggart

A possible cross base originally classified as a bullaun stone was located at the E end of Saggart church (DU021-034002-) and graveyard (DU021-034003-). It may have been buried in the fosse defining the edge of the graveyard which may have been built on the site of the 7th-century monastery founded by St Mosacra. Described by Ó Ríordáin (1947, 86) as follows; 'In his note on Saggart Lord Walter FitzGerald mentions a stone with a hollow in it known as the "wart-stone" but does not note the fact that it served as a socket for the cross or pillar the shaped end (height about 40 cm.) of which is still in position in the socket'.
