Enclosure in Rossacoosane

This D-shaped enclosure, not marked on the OS maps, is located in rough pasture on a steep, SW facing slope of Letter South mountain. The site affords fine views over Kenmare Bay and the Beara Peninsula to S. The enclosing wall, .75m high externally, is composed of irregular courses of drystone masonry flanked intermittently by uprights and slabs set on edge. The wall is .7m wide and there is no clear evidence of an entrance. The area enclosed measures 12.4m internally. In the S half of the interior, two semicircular arcs of drystone walling indicate the remnants of two huts. That at SE (KE092-044001-) is much collapsed and overgrown. Its coursed walling survives to a maximum height of .4m, and it has an overall diameter of 4m. The second structure, at SW (KE092-044002-) has an internal diameter of 2m and its regularly coursed wall survives .3m high. A semicircular enclosure (KE092-044003-), 6.3m in diameter, abuts the site externally at W. Its wall is largely collapsed and is formed mainly of upright slabs which average .5m high.
