Knowles found fresh sand scars in Ross during the 1880s, marking huts that people had recently abandoned or buried. They sat beside a midden and a burial, proving the dunes were once a busy living place rather than empty waste. The exact spots are lost now, but the chamber remains a reminder that even changing coastal sand can preserve human life for a short time before taking it back.

In sand dunes on the Ross peninsula. In the late 19th-century, Knowles (1889-91, 616) recorded the following: "… in Ross….I found numerous hut sites from which … the sand covering cannot have been long removed." The hut sites were associated with a midden (MA15-059001-) and a burial (MA015-059003-). The exact location of the hut sites was not recorded and remains unknown.
