Lisheen

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Lisheen is a children's burial ground hidden beside the Galway ringfort, though no grave marker or pit remains visible today. The name survived on old maps while the earth forgot the shape of the loss, leaving only the field and the memory of children beneath it.
Associated with a ringfort (GA056-129----). On OS 6-inch maps, the ringfort is named 'Lisheen' which suggests the former presence of a CBG. However, no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
