Castle, unclassified in Oldkilcullen belongs to the medieval borough where several ruined castles and stone houses stood together. Gerald, earl of Kildare, protected the Kilcullen castle owned by the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, Dublin, from coign and livery. The castle reappeared among priory possessions in 1504, but its exact place has been lost beneath the town’s later life.

According to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 4, 388-9), the Civil Survey (1654) records the presence at Kilcullen of ‘severall ruined Castles and Stone houses.’ They formed part of the medieval borough here (KD028-049----). In a document dating to either 1477-8 or 1480-92, Gerald, earl of Kildare, ordered that the castle at Kilcullen, belonging to the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, Dublin, should be free of coign and livery. This castle is again mentioned among the priory’s possessions in 1504. Its precise location is unknown. A second castle (KD028-049009-) belonged to Great Connell (KD023-016----)..
