Indicated is a submerged crannog in Mullaghmore Lake, County Monaghan, where five oak piles still protrude through an overgrown cairn. The lake has shrunk since 1834, exposing more of the circular structure and reminding us that water retreats but does not erase memory.

Situated towards the NE end of the oval Mullaghmore Lake (dims c. 380m NE-SW; c. 200m NW-SE) that has shrunk somewhat from its representation on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map (dims c. 500m NE-SW; c. 300m NW-SE). This is a circular overgrown cairn (diam. 28m E-W; 25m N-S) which has evidence of a retaining kerb, and it is located in deep water. Five large oak piles were noted protruding through the cairn on the S side. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
