Danish invaders and vanished Cask Hole, but the earth remembers shape. A circular pit, fourteen feet deep and eight feet wide, still marks the mountain air. The chamber may have held treasure, water, or the breath of forgotten people. The mountain keeps what the world forgets.

On an elevated area of blanket bog, in the Slievefelim Mountains. Annotated 'Poulastanna' on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map which O'Donovan interpreted as the 'hole or pit of the stan or barrell, known locally as 'The Cask Hole' (OSNB Doon Parish, 604). Described in 1840 as following; 'This hole, which is thought to be a Danish stucture, is about 14 feet [4.26m] deep and 8 feet [2.4m] wide. It is circular, and made of stones. It is on a heathy mountain (ibid.). Depicted on the revised 1903 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped feature (approx. dims. 15m N-S x 10m E-W), depicted a depression or hollow in the landscape rather than an extant monument. Visible as an oval-shaped area of differential growth on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and Google Earth orthoimage taken 18/11/2018. May be just a natural or geological feature with no archaeological significance. Alternatively could be the remains of a pond-barrow which became an important landmark in the locality.
