Monastery (Site of)

Situated in an area named the 'Little Glen of the Monastery' on the 1912 OS 6-inch map which lies between two roads running parallel (50m apart) towards Enniskerry. The site appears to have consisted of a church and a holy well. A font is reported to have been dug up near the site, and there is a possible holy well (WI003-031001-) to the SE. The site is very overgrown. (O'Flanagan 1928, 2-3; Price 1957, 292-4). Archaeological test trenches opened in the vicinity of this monument in 2007, as part of the construction of the Enniskerry water supply scheme (Excavation Licence 07E0169), did not reveal anything of archaeological significance (Bayley 2010, 555) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
