Mannan Castle

Mannan Castle rises twelve metres above a Monaghan drumlin, marking the ancient capital of Airgíalla with a stone keep that still defies easy removal. Roger Pipard built the first wooden structure there in 1193, less to defend against attack than to declare Norman ownership atop a Gaelic seat of prestige. Irish fire destroyed that wooden claim in 1230, forcing a stone replacement in 1244 that transformed a temporary marker into a permanent wound in the landscape. Local story claims animal blood in the mortar, but the real binding agent was arrogance: every joint hammered shut the gap between conquest and forgetting.
