Fifty buried chambers still wait inside a broken oval on the Millockstown ridge, sealed when the land was taken for farming. They belong to the place's final known phase, after an earlier enclosure and ringfort, but the people who built them have not handed their names forward. The chambers were not destroyed; they were bypassed, leaving the dead suspended between memory and forgetting.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Situated on a natural terrace on the SW slope of an E-W ridge. Complex site discovered during land reclamation and partially excavated by C. Manning in 1980. Consists of two Man-made underground passages (LH017-054004- and LH017-054005-) within an oval enclosure (LH017-054003-) which contained over 50 lintelled graves (LH017-054006-). This is adjudged by the excavator to be the third phase of activity on the site. The oval enclosure, which measured c. 100m E-W by 40m N-S, was defined by a ditch (Manning 1986, fig 3, ditch 3) up to 2.8m wide and 1.5m deep. The cemetery (LH017-054006-) was located near its centre. The second phase is a ringfort (LH017-054002-). The initial phase was an irregularly-shaped enclosure (LH017-054001-). In completing land reclamation the two Man-made underground passages were left intact but inaccessible and much of the stratigraphy on the northern half of the site was left undisturbed.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
