Gallow Graveyard

Gallow Graveyard sits atop an ancient hill fort in County Meath, where the Maher family reclaimed a ruined church for their own dead before the lane became a bogged track for cattle. William Maher died there in 1837 after a life of charity and zeal, his massive tablet still guarding the chancel where worship once echoed. The oval plot rises above the countryside, keeping every grave on the summit of the old fort while the forgotten castle and vanished nave dissolve into grass and memory.
