Saints Island

Saints Island is a small islet off the Mayo coast whose name preserves a local tradition of Christian veneration. It belongs to the wider Irish pattern of island monasticism, where remote places became sites of prayer, burial or meditation from the sixth century onwards. The sea did the work of a wall, keeping the island separate from ordinary life and giving it a quiet, sacred shape.
