Rathmarrick

Six and a half metres of flat-topped stone and earth still mark Rathmarrick on a gravel ridge above Killeen, though brambles and pasture have softened its edges. It appeared on maps in 1838 and remained named in 1922, preserving a shape perhaps made for the dead or for remembering the land. The steeper north-western slope suggests someone cut or changed it, but when and why has not been recorded. Nephin Mountain watches from beyond the ridge, giving the mound a horizon fit for a place whose true purpose has slipped into silence.
