Rath beg

Carrowgarve holds two ringforts because the land itself refused to be empty. Rath beg is the smaller one, yet its maker understood the slope well enough to build a level floor inside the circle. The northern bank still stands proud while the western edge has given way to time, and blackthorn now works the southern arc into a living hedge. The River Deel passes within three hundred metres, carrying rain from the same pasture that fed the fort. What is recorded is a shape; what is missing is the family, the children, the arguments and the reason the place was wanted at all.
