Man-made underground passage in Manning

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Courtenay Moore recorded the closed underground passage on Rialli land in 1900, preserving the warning that a cow died inside it. The exact location has been lost, but the account still points to a hidden tunnel where ordinary farmland ended and darkness began. Perhaps people stopped entering after that loss, leaving the passage to keep its own secret.
Courtenay Moore (1900, 373) recorded a Man-made underground passage (similar to CO027-090---) also on the land of Mr Rialli [sic]. It was closed following the death of a cow. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
