Man-made underground passage in Kippagh (muskerry West By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under the largest of two forts on Tim Buckley's farm in Kippagh, a hidden chamber waited for entry. Broker recorded the underground passage in 1937, but the fort itself has since been levelled, erasing the marker that once pointed to its mouth. The earth kept the secret long after the boundary disappeared, proving that memory needs more than stone to survive.
Broker (1937, 44) recorded an 'underground chamber', with an entrance in the centre of the largest of two forts on Tim Buckley's farm. Exact location not known though it may refer to the possible ringfort (8737) which has been levelled. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
