Roodstown Castle is a four-storey tower house built in the fifteenth century to watch the road between Ardee and the Irish Sea. It still stands beside the roadside in County Louth, tall enough to dwarf the smaller ten-pound castles mentioned in local memory. The Taaffe name belongs to that memory, but the stone itself preserves a spiral stair, a murder-hole, ogee windows and fireplaces large enough for real life. Someone climbed those stairs, dropped water through that hole and sat beside those flames before the castle became a monument.
