Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort in County Cork, a circular earthen ring measuring forty-four metres across on a north-facing pasture slope. Its bank stands one and a half metres high on the northeast but drops to thirty centimetres elsewhere, partly absorbed into modern field fences. A two-metre gap faces north while a narrower cattle gap opens southeast, suggesting the ring served both human herds and older, less measurable claims. The grass-covered interior slopes gently downward, preserving a shape that may have marked boundary, belief, or belonging long before fences arrived.
In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular area (44m E-W; 43.5m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.5m; ext. H 1.4m) NNE->W; low grass-covered bank elsewhere (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.65m). Bank incorporated into field fence system NNE->W and straightened or modified in parts. Slight depression, not measurable, inside and at base of bank SE->SSW. Entrance (Wth 2m) to N; cattle gap (Wth 1m) to SSE. Interior grass-covered; slopes gently down to N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
