Burial Ground — Report the wrong picture

Twelve centuries of rain and ploughing erased every marker, yet thirteen bodies still lie crossed beneath the Gollierstown pasture. They belonged to somebody, loved and buried with intention before the townland had a name anyone remembers. The pipeline cut one edge of their quiet field and stopped, leaving the rest of the dead unseen beneath ordinary grass. Absence of a monument is not absence of a life.

The W quadrant of an ecclesiastrical enclosure survives inside the graveyard wall. Comprises a flat-topped earthen bank (dims. Wth c. 2m, H 0.90m-1m). It is associated with a holy well (dims. Wth c. 2m, H 0.90m-1m). The exterior is slightly raised. Still in use as a burial ground (D'Alton 1838, 673, Swan 1986, 7). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Uploaded on: 17 January 2012
