What is recorded here
Indicated is a circular earthen ringfort on a slight SE-facing slope in County Limerick, Ireland, with wide views and a small stream running south near the Cahercorney boundary. O’Kelly described it in 1944 as a collapsed stone fort about 27m across, with a possible eastern entrance and no visible ditch. It sits among older markers, including a cashel, a standing stone and Knockbolg House, suggesting the hill has long invited people to stop, watch or remember.
In pasture on a slight SE-facing slope with goods views in all directions 5m W of the townland boundary with Cahercorney where a small stream runs S. Located 100m NE of a cashel (LI032-066----); 450m ENE of a standing stone (LI032-065----) and 390m NNW of Knockbolg House (NIAH Reg. No. 21903217). The site is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 28m) on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. O’Kelly (1944, 28) described the site as a stone fort consisting of ‘a small structure now very collapsed. On the W side where a modern fence has been built the rampart has entirely disappeared. A gap 15’ [4.57m] wide on the E side is probably the entrance. None of the facing stones of the bank are visible. There is no fosse. The overall diameter is 88’ [26.82m] and the maximum height of the rampart is 4’ [1.22m]. Situated on the SE side of Knockroe Hill’. The site is covered by sod that has accumulated over the cashel bank visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 20/03/2018; 28/06/2018 and 20/09/2020.
