Carrigogunnell Castle

Carrigogunnell Castle stands as a ruined rock fortress near Clarina, County Limerick, where O’Brien kings defended the Shannon before Cromwell’s troops and Jacobite soldiers took turns inside its walls. In 1691, Williamite cannon smashed the castle during the siege of Limerick, leaving the broken shape still visible on the hill. Local story says a hag once lit an enchanted candle on the rock, killing whoever watched it until a hero from the Regan clan broke the spell. The place keeps both facts and legend, which is why it still stops travellers on the road from Limerick to Kerry.
