What is recorded here
Letter West holds a fractured sandstone boulder marked by fourteen visible cupmarks and pickmarks, half buried in mountain heath above the Behy valley. The stone sits between two streams on a NE-facing slope, exposing only its western edge while weathering and freeze-thaw continue to erase what remains. Whoever struck those marks likely worked in daylight, watching water move through the valley below, then disappeared into the heath with the rest of the living world.
In rocky mountain heath (207m OD), on a NE-facing slope. Excellent views of Behy river valley to NE with Seefin and Droum Mountains in background. Situated between two streams, one of which is c. 7m to WNW and the other is c. 10m to ESE. A slightly rough and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 2.1m E-W; 1.35m N-S; H 0.5m) which is oval in plan, but only partially exposed around W and N perimeter. It has an irregular decorated surface (dims. 0.5m N-S; 0.25m E-W) which has a flat surface and is only exposed along W margin. The decorated surface bears a minimum of fourteen motifs upon the exposed portion of stone. There are seven large pickmarks and a further seven definite circular and oval cupmarks. Very weathered remains of other possible pickmarks and cupmarks. Weathering and freeze-thaw action noted upon decorated surface. It is likely that additional motifs are obscured under the sod to E.
