Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lavagh (leitrim By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for human habitation, according to local story. They belong to the hidden people who dance at midnight and break the bones of anyone who follows them. The earth remembers that warning even when forgetful humans stop repeating it.
Situated on a gentle S-facing slope. This rath was described in 1991 (SMR file) as a grass and rush-covered subcircular area (dims 19.1m N-S; 17.4m E-W) defined by a scarp (at E: Wth 3.8m; H 0.4m), except at NNE where an earthen bank (Wth of base 3.6m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.9m) survived. There was no visible fosse or identifiable entrance, and the perimeter was slightly truncated by a N-S field bank at W. Its visible profile had been greatly reduced by 2005 (OSAP). Rath (LE032-018----) is c. 35m to the W, rath (LE032-020----) is c. 40m to the E, and rath (LE032-021----) is c. 80m to the S. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 23 September 2008 Amended: 5 December, 2019
