What is recorded here

Indicated is a faded ringfort in County Longford pasture, overlooking marshland and marked as a fort on an 1837 map. Its shallow bank, narrow ditch and broad southeast gap suggest a place where people once entered, watched the wet distance and lived beneath an open sky.

In rolling pasture overlooking an extensive area of marshland to the NE. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A raised circular area (diam. 40.9m) enclosed by a much-denuded low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.1m; H 0.4m max.) with a shallow external fosse (Wth 2.6m; D 0.2m). A wide break (Wth 3.8m) in the bank at SE may mark the original entrance. The interior slopes appreciably from SW-NE. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
