Kiln

Kiln, corn-drying

What is recorded here

This kiln (16) is an oval feature (dims 2.1m E-W; 1.2m N-S; D 0.65m) located c. 2m S of kiln (ME038-071009-) and c. 33m NNE of the central barrow (ME038-071001-). It is steep-sided with a fire-reddened base, particularly at its W end. The kiln had nine distinct fills, but two periods of use separated by a deliberate infilling could be distinguished. Barley predominated in both, although wheat was appearing in the second. A sample of barley from the basal fill returned a date of 422-596 cal. AD (BETA 241298).
