Battle of Tara Hill

Four thousand rebels crowded Tara Hill on 26 May 1798, believing ancient kingship would lend them strength against seven hundred British troops. Instead cannon grapeshot and cavalry flanks broke them within hours, leaving hundreds dead in a grave still marked by the Lia Fail stone. The hill did not need legend that evening; it gave up its secret in a single dusk of fire and flight.
