Graveyard

What is recorded here

Grave Yd is a living graveyard on a west-facing slope in County Cork, where headstones from the 1830s still mark the dead. It occupies the vanished site of Kilmacabea Church, though no building remains visible today. The place holds both memory and mystery, preserving what the land once worshipped and what it has since forgotten.
In pasture, on W-facing slope; polygonal area (c. 64m N-S; c. 46m E-W) enclosed by stone wall (H 1.5m). Headstones date to 1830s; still in use. No visible remains of Kilmacabea Church (site of) (CO133-064002-) marked on OS 6-inch map (1903) or Watch Ho. (CO133-064003-) marked on OS 6-inch map (1842). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
