Fairy forts are not for fairies, though people have always suspected them of belonging to someone else. The ring at Killyslavan is a human fort, probably old, with a bank, a ditch and an opening that faced the land instead of hiding from it. What is missing has not departed; it has become ordinary, buried under grass, traffic and forgetfulness. To stand inside it is to remember that visibility is not the same as understanding.

Situated at the crest of the NE-facing slope of a drumlin. A circular earthwork is depicted on the revision of the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map dated 1858, and it is depicted as a curved field bank surviving SE-W-NW on the 1907 edition. There are faint traces of earthen bank and external fosse surrounding a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 31.5m E-W; c. 20m N-S). it is truncated by an E-W field bank at N and there is a pole on the bank at SE. Rath (MO003-048----) is c. 30m to the SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
