Carn Graveyard in County Kildare has held dead since 1870, its cut-stone crosses and obelisks still standing beside a rubble wall and iron gates from the 1880s. At its centre a small mound rises, perhaps the ghost of a lost chapel, giving the place a depth older than any marker. The Celtic Cross styles suggest that even in death, people wanted beauty, identity and remembrance rather than forgetfulness.
