Susan's Fort

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Susan's Fort rises six metres above Balkinstown pasture as a low oval mound, marked on maps since 1839 and consistent with an early medieval ringfort. Gravel pits have bitten through its structure, exposing layered construction and a human skull in the north-east quadrant that badgers may have dragged from its original resting place. The fort is no longer a hidden mystery but an open wound in the earth, showing what phase-by-phase hands built and what time has since rearranged.
Susan's Fort is recorded as a archaeological place in County Kildare. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
