Tynte's Castle stands fifty feet high on the north-east side of Main Street, its thick walls hiding a staircase that climbs to battlements lit by narrow lancet windows. Built by the Walshe family and later claimed by Sir Robert Tynte, the tower survived centuries of alteration before becoming a grain store with large vertical openings cut through its front. The building still holds two internal vaults and a machicolation above the door, preserving the shape of a defensive home long after its martial purpose faded.

On NE side of Main Street; known as Tynte's Castle. Described as 'much altered 15th cent. tower-house' (Killanin and Duignan 1962, 459); Harbison (1977, 62) considers it 16th century. Apparently built by Walshe family; later came into possesion of Sir Robert Tynte (CO077-065---). Tower measures '39 feet by 23 feet and is 50 feet high' (Wain 1965, 57), with 'a machicolation over the main door', and 'a stairs in the thickness of the walls leads to the battlements which are lighted by lancet windows' (ibid). Used as grain store in recent times with large vertical openings inserted in front elevation to form a loop (see drawing Healy 1988, 155).There are two internal vaults, over ground and 2nd floors. Built by the Walshe family in the 16th century, Tynte's Castle (Youghal-Lands) is remembered as a significant example of a tower-house in the region, reflecting the defensive and social structures of the period.
