The Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of Crannagh (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin), depicts a large house in 'Ballidowell' townland, W of the Arigna River. Three other houses (KK013-097002-) are indicated along the E side of the river. The proprietor in 1640 is noted as, 'Countess of Ormond P[ro]testant'.
