Bawn in Sart

A castle (KK013-094001-)and three houses (KK013-094002-) are indicated on the Down Survey map (1655-6) parish map of ‘Clonetubrid and Glasshicroe’ and the castle is also indicated on the Down Survey map (1655-6) parish map of ‘Belanemarra’ (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). According to O'Kelly (1969, 5), 'Sart castle stood in the Cellar field, so named from the castle cellar still remaining'. Field inspection in 1987 identified this field as being SE of Sart crossroads. However, in the field immediately S of this there is a large rectangular cropmark (dims. c. 104m NE-SW; c. 80m NW-SE), visible on satellite imagery (Google Earth, imagery date 28 June 2018) which is likely to be a bawn associated with the castle. The Bawn in Sart was likely constructed during the mid-17th century, as it appears on the Down Survey maps from 1655-1656, indicating its role in the historical landscape of that period. Its presence alongside three houses suggests it served as a defensive or administrative center for the local area during and after the Cromwellian conquests.
