Graveyard in Cork City

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Children chase each other across the grass where St. Mary's Shandon stood from 1693 until it was taken down in 1879. The graveyard lost its church and identity, but the ground remains marked by a stone wall on the east side of Shandon Street. Joy and memory collide in the same space, with buried time underlying the laughter above it.
On E side of Shandon Street and c. 60m N of river Lee. Roughly rectangular grass-covered area (c. 60m E-W; c. 25m N-S) enclosed by stone wall; now used as childrens playground. No visible surface trace of C of I church, St. Mary's Shandon, built in 1693 (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 283), and 'taken down' in 1879 (O'Shea 1943, 32). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
