Saint Otteran's Hospital

Detached two-bay single-storey rubble stone outbuilding with attic, c.1860, retaining original aspect. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, pitched slate roof to lantern to ridge, decorative timber bargeboards to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Broken coursed rock-faced squared rubble limestone walls with limestone ashlar quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills, cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds, and 3/2 timber sash windows. Lunette window openings to side elevations with cut-stone sills, cut-limestone surrounds, and fixed-pane timber windows. Square-headed window openings to lantern with pivoting (horizontal) timber windows. Set back from road in grounds shared with Saint Otteran’s Hospital.

A picturesque small-scale building that has been well maintained, and which retains its original form and fabric. Features, including the lunette window openings, decorative timber bargeboards, and the lantern to the roof, all serve to enhance the architectural quality of the composition. The building forms a neat group with the associated mortuary chapel (22830058/WD-09-30-58), and forms an integral component of the Saint Otteran’s Hospital complex.
