Graveslab in Gowran

In the 17th-century mortuary chapel adjoining externally the S wall of the nave of the 13th-century church of St Mary’s (KK020-060006-) in Gowran. A tapering sandstone slab (max. L 0.84m; max. Wth at top 0.39m; surface Wth at top 0.32m; max. Wth at base 0.29m; surface Wth at base 0.22m; T 0.12) with a chamfer around the upper edge (Wth 0.035m). The slab is broken horizontally along the top. It is decorated with an incised cross but this is very worn and only the cross-shaft and traces of the cross-base are evident. The underside of the slab appears to have a concave profile suggesting it may have been a tomb lid. Similar tapering slabs date to the 13th/14th-century.
