Graveslab in Gowran

Lying on the floor near the centre of the S wall of a 19th-century C of I church which was built on the former chancel of the 13th-century church of St Mary’s (KK020-060006-) in Gowran. A tapering slab (max. L 1.72m; surface L 1.61m; overall Wth at top 0.55m; overall Wth at base 0.31m; surface Wth at top 0.44m; surface Wth at base 0.22m; T 0.18m) with a chamfer (Wth 0.08m) around the upper edge. The slab is broken roughly horizontally into three pieces, the upper portion (L 0.6m), the centre portion (L of sinister side 0.28m) and lower portion (L of dexter side 0.57m). The upper surface of the upper dexter side of the lower portion has broken off. The slab is decorated with an incised cross. The cross-head is quite worn and the surface somewhat spalled. It consists of a four-armed banded cross with fleur-de-lis terminals. There is a circular knop below the cross-head and another one above the cross-base. The cross-shaft terminates in a simple fleur-de-lis. There is no visible inscription. Stylistically this dates to the 13th/14th century. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 20 August 2019
