Graveslab in Gowran

Lying on the floor at the base of the N wall of a 19th-century C of I church which was built on the former chancel of the 13th-century church of St Mary’s (KK020-060006-) in Gowran. A tapering sandstone slab (L 1.72m; overall Wth at top 0.48m; overall Wth at base 0.38m; Wth at top surface 0.39m; Wth at base surface 0.32m; D 0.23m), the upper edge of which is chamfered (Wth 0.0.5m). The slab is decorated with an incised cross consisting of a very worn seven-armed cross with fleur-de-lis terminals within a circle. The cross-shaft terminates simply, with a curving knop above a pointed terminal. There is no visible inscription. Stylistically this dates to the 13th/14th century.
