Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gowlane South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mairi's story and the evidence both point to one place: the fort is a chambered tomb, built around a living woman and completed only after she died. The chamber is not a mistake or a hollow legend. It is the shape of the world remembering her, and the world is still completing the form.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. 30m), just to W of ringfort (CO050-093002-). In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. Man-made underground passage (CO050-093003-) found within ringfort in April 2000. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
