Fairy forts in Kerry hide inside ordinary fields, yet Glannagalt stands as a double-ringed earthwork on a steep slope, looking north along the valley toward Tralee Bay. Its inner and outer banks still rise above a broken fosse, while a narrow causeway cuts southeast through the gaps. Cattle have troubled the ditch and a western track suggests animals still use the ring, but the shape remains clear enough to imagine people watching the valley, keeping fire, and leaving before the story changed them into fairy name.
Internal diam. 23.8m N-S, 26.2m E-W
This bivallate rath, situated on a fairly steep E facing slope, commands an excellent view along Gleann na nGealt as far as Tralee Bay to N. The inner bank varies from .4 to 1.7m in height internally and falls a maximum of 3m to the base of the fosse. The fosse averages 3m in width and has been much disturbed by cattle. The outer bank rises from .4 to 1.4m above the base of the fosse and averages .6m in height externally; to W it doubles as a field boundary fence. There are slight traces of an outer fosse, 2m wide and .4m deep, along the W sector but this may be natural or accidental. A lane runs N-S alongside the site at E. A .9m wide gap through the banks at WSW appears to be an animal track. The original entrance lies to SE where a 2.9m wide causeway leads across the fosse between a 3.50m wide gap in the outer bank and a 1.5m wide gap in the inner bank.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 436. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
