What is recorded here

Half a ringfort still stands in Garrymore, its western curve lost to the field but its eastern bank holding the shape of a room large enough for a village chamber. The gap at the southeast may have been the door, and the even interior floor may have carried footsteps, carts, or arguments under an open sky. The fairies keep the missing half in story while the earth keeps the visible half in stone.

Situated on a S-facing slope, immediately E and S of a field boundary. Depicted on the 1923 OS map as a D-shaped enclosure defined on its W side by a N-S field boundary and from N to S by the curving arch of an earthen bank; the depiction suggests this is the E side of a ringfort, the W side being levelled. It is now evident as a sub-rectangular area (c. 47m N-S; 19m E-W), enclosed N to E by a bank and defined E to S by a scarped edge (H 0.8m; Wth 10.6m), and defined by a field boundary on W side. The bank (int. H 0.5m; Wth 2.4m: ext. H 0.3m) is of earth-and-stone construction and is better defined in the N (int. H 1.2m; Wth 1.2m; ext. H 1.5m). There is a gap in the enclosing element at SE (Wth 1.6m) which may represent an entrance. The interior surface is relatively even and slopes down to S. There are piles of topsoil, grassed over, in the NE part of the interior up against the bank. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 13 June 2013
