What is recorded here

Gortnatemple Graveyard holds eighteen and nineteenth century headstones inside a modern wall on good pasture land in County Offaly. The flat trapezoidal ground gives no hint of buried structure, yet the stones mark a long line of local death and remembrance. The bog to the north and fields to the south frame a place where ordinary life still passes the dead.
Modern burial ground with no above surface indications of any structure of archaeological interest. Located on good pasture land with the bog to the N and good pasture land to the S, W and E. Large trapezoidal area enclosed by modern wall with 18th/19th-century headstones. No other features visible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
